The Office of Minority Affairs partners with minority faculty and staff to offer Mercer minority freshmen a "Minority Student Success Conference." The purpose of the conference is to positively impact the freshman to sophomore retention rate. By putting on this conference, we are providing students opportunities outside of the classroom to interact with faculty and staff. These interactions will focus on those behaviors and skills that promote student achievement and those areas that complement academic efforts. Some of these include:

  • The Mercer academic culture
  • Faculty and student expectations
  • The importance of collaborative learning
  • When does one know a major is not for him/her?
  • Establishing relationships throughout the Mercer community
  • Balancing work, friends, and family
  • Academic integrity
  • Academic enhancements (honors programs, community service, study abroad, student research)
  • Financial Planning
  • Becoming a leader

A recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education, entitled "Underrepresented Students benefit most from Engagement," said that “…the gains from these practices (from collaborative learning and educational activities outside the classroom) are even greater for students from underrepresented racial and ethnic backgrounds, or who come to college less prepared than their peers. … This year’s survey found that student engagement had a ‘compensatory effect’ on grades and students’ likelihood of returning for a second year of college, particularly among underserved minority populations and students entering college with lower levels of achievement.  Data indicated that activities such as collaborating with peers on projects inside and outside the classroom helped students overcome previous educational disadvantages.” 

The offerings from this conference are also consistent with the goals outlined for minority affairs programs by the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS):

  • Assess the needs of minority students in selected areas
  • Orient minority students to the culture of the institution
  • Assist minority students to determine and assess their educational goals and academic skills
  • Provide support services to help minority student achieve educational goals
  • Promote the intellectual, career, social, and moral development of the students
  • Provide training in leadership skills as well as personal and social skills
